Sidr honey vs Manuka: how do they compare?

These are the two honeys most often described as premium, and they are usually compared badly — as though one must be better than the other. They are different products from different trees, and the more useful comparison is structural.

The botanical difference

Manuka honey comes from bees foraging on Leptospermum scoparium, a shrub native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. Sidr honey comes from bees foraging on Ziziphus spina-christi, the Sidr or Christ's thorn jujube, which grows across arid valley systems of the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa.

Both are monofloral honeys, meaning the bees foraged predominantly on a single species. Both are seasonal and geographically constrained. Neither can be produced at scale in the way clover or acacia honey can.

The difference that actually matters: grading

This is the real distinction, and it is not about the honey at all.

Manuka has a grading system. UMF and MGO are numbers a buyer can check. MGO measures methylglyoxal concentration in milligrams per kilogram. UMF is a broader graded standard administered by a licensing body, incorporating markers of authenticity as well as potency. Whatever their limitations, they give a buyer a number, a definition of what that number means, and a body that stands behind it.

Sidr has no equivalent. There is no widely adopted numeric grade, no licensing body, and no agreed set of parameters. Buyers are asked to rely on the seller's description, and descriptions are not comparable across sellers.

The consequence is that the Sidr category has a verification gap that the Manuka category largely closed twenty years ago. It is not that Sidr is less good. It is that Sidr is less checkable.

What each system does and does not prove

It is worth being precise here, because grading systems are often over-read.

An MGO number tells you the methylglyoxal concentration. It does not by itself establish geographic origin, moisture, freshness, or the absence of adulteration. UMF incorporates more, but it remains a system built around a particular compound in a particular honey.

A useful grade for Sidr would have to answer different questions, because the failure modes in this category are different. The dominant risks in the Sidr market are adulteration with sugar syrup, misrepresented origin, and honey harvested early and dried industrially. A grade that does not gate on those is not measuring the right things — which is one reason simply copying the MGO or UMF model would not work.

Flavour and use

Manuka is characteristically earthy, mineral, somewhat medicinal, and quite thick. Sidr is more floral and caramel-like, with a long finish, and varies noticeably by wadi and by harvest — the same producer's autumn and spring harvests can taste distinctly different.

That variability is worth understanding rather than eliminating. It is a consequence of the honey being genuinely tied to a place and a season. Honey that tastes identical batch after batch has usually been blended to make it so.

Price

Both sit well above commodity honey. Premium Manuka and premium Sidr occupy broadly similar price territory, though direct comparison is difficult because Manuka pricing is anchored to a published grade and Sidr pricing largely is not.

Our view

The honest summary is that Manuka solved a problem Sidr has not yet solved. A buyer of Manuka can check a number. A buyer of Sidr is asked to trust a story.

DAY21's response is not to invent a marketing number. It is to publish, for every batch, the full third-party laboratory analysis — pollen, C4 sugar, moisture, HMF, diastase and safety panel — so that a buyer can check the underlying data directly rather than a score derived from it. We are also working with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council on a formal grading framework for Sidr honey. Until that exists, published raw data is the most honest thing we can offer.
